Food consumption surveys, analysis and models

Understanding the foods that populations consume is vital. This data informs public health policy, food safety as well as the food industry.

Food consumption surveys analysis and models

Food consumption surveys

Food consumption surveys are at the heart of data for nutrition. These surveys provide insight into the foods populations consume, energy and nutrient intakes and potential exposure to harmful hazards in food. From this data, we can gain an understanding trends and patterns in a population. This data can monitor food behaviours to inform public health initiatives and policies. It can be used to assess the effects of reformation, changes in portion sizes or food replacement scenarios.

Food consumption surveys generally include data on the foods consumed, quantity of consumption as well as on the energy and nutrient composition of these foods. How dietary data is collected varies depending on the survey, for example by 24-hour recall, food diary or food frequency questionnaire. Data are also collected on the individuals who completed the study (e.g. demographics, anthropometrics, clinical chemistry etc.). These datasets are generally nationally representative. Granular food intake data also allows to assess the effects of various modelling scenarios, e.g. food replacement, portion sizes, reformulation.

Validated and Ready-to-use

The raw data from food consumption surveys tend to be from large datasets with various structural formats and quality. At Creme Global, we take a number of measures to install data into our platform in a form that is ready-to-use. The datasets are further validated against published results from journals or from original study reports.

Alternative data sources

Sometimes certain data are not collected as part of the food consumption surveys. Data from other sources is required and can be used and in conjunction with these surveys. Some examples include novel ingredients, specific contaminants, composition data of a new product or market share data. This data can come from publications or reports, proprietary data or regulatory databases. At Creme Global our tools can handle both point estimates (averaged data) or distributions.

Custom designed models and technical services

With our in-house expertise in software development, mathematical modelling and domain knowledge in food science and safety, nutrition and toxicology, Creme Global is uniquely placed to help clients obtain the best solution in developing custom models for them. As well as providing unique software applications, our team provides technical services to clients using our in-house expertise. These services include in depth data analysis and modelling followed by routine or customised exposure and intake assessments delivered via comprehensive technical reports.
